Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a crucial role in trade, economic growth, job creation, innovation, and social stability. According to the 2023 OECD Studies on Public Policies for Responsible Business Conduct in Costa Rica, SMEs accounted for 97,4% of all businesses in the country.
The Ministry of Foreign Trade is committed to supporting the growth and development of SMEs, enhancing their ability to participate in and benefit from the opportunities created by existing trade agreements.

The General Directorate for SME Support (DIGEPYME in Spanish) is responsible for implementing policies to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of SMEs in Costa Rica. It develops projects and support programs that provide technical assistance to the industrial, commercial, and service sectors, ultimately improving the country´s socio-economic development.
